Matching ignores case, spacing and dashes, and national prefixes such as DIN EN, BS EN or NF EN. An ISO or IEC reference is tried as its EN ISO or EN IEC adoption, since only the European adoption can be harmonised. The undated form finds every dated edition on the lists (EN 60204-1), an ETSI reference without its version finds the version cited (EN 301 489-17), and a series number finds every part (EN 18031). A reference that the Commission names only in a notice on another standard, such as EN 301 489-1, links to a page that says where it is named. "Not on the lists" means the reference is not in any summary list we archive today (Machinery, Radio Equipment, General Product Safety) nor in the CRA and AI Act drafting programmes; it says nothing about other directives.
Do harmonised standards exist for my product?
Search the register with a word from your product's name, for example woodworking or household. It matches reference and title on every list we archive. Then paste the references you find into the checker above. The register covers the Commission's lists for the Machinery Directive, the Radio Equipment Directive and the General Product Safety Regulation, plus the CRA and AI Act drafting programmes. For any other directive or regulation, the Commission's harmonised standards page links every list.
Do I have to use a harmonised standard?
No. Regulation (EU) No 1025/2012 defines a standard as a technical specification “with which compliance is not compulsory”, and a harmonised standard as a European standard “adopted on the basis of a request made by the Commission for the application of Union harmonisation legislation”. What a harmonised standard adds is presumption of conformity: once its reference is published in the Official Journal, a product made to it is presumed to meet the requirements the standard covers. A manufacturer who does not use one must show conformity by other means. Until its reference is published in the Official Journal, a harmonised standard gives no presumption of conformity, which is why the checker shows drafts and published but not yet cited standards separately.
